The 2025 SAG Awards were a lively and celebratory affair, recognizing the season’s standout performances just one week ahead of the Oscars. The evening also served as a nod to the less glamorous early roles of actors and the rite of passage that comes with guest appearances on the numerous “Law & Order” series. While much of the night unfolded as anticipated — at least according to industry experts — there were notable snubs and surprises that kept the atmosphere engaging.

Surprise: Timothée Chalamet Wins Best Male Actor in a Leading Role

Many believed the award was Adrien Brody’s to lose, especially after his demanding performance in “The Brutalist” earned him both the BAFTA and the Golden Globe. However, Chalamet’s dynamic portrayal, impressive press engagements, and transparency about his process garnered him significant acclaim.

Snub: “The Bear” and “Hacks” Miss Out on Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series

Perhaps SAG voters were weary of the ongoing debate about whether “The Bear” qualifies as a comedy, leading them to favor the ensemble of “Only Murders in the Building,” featuring Steve Martin, Selena Gomez, and Martin Short. After a less-than-stellar third season, is the buzz around “The Bear” starting to fade? Additionally, this marks the third consecutive year that “Hacks” star Jean Smart has won Best Female Actor in a Comedy Series, while the show’s ensemble left empty-handed.

Surprise: Martin Short Takes Home Best Male Actor in a Comedy Series

While many expected Jeremy Allen White’s acclaimed role as a perfectionist chef in “The Bear” or Adam Brody’s buzzworthy rabbi character in “Nobody Wants This” to win, Short’s consistently quirky and heartfelt performance in “Only Murders in the Building” seemed like a long shot. Even legacy votes were anticipated for Harrison Ford in “Shrinking.” Ultimately, it was the well-liked Short who had the opportunity to deliver an acceptance speech (though he was absent from the ceremony).

Surprise: “Conclave” Wins Film Ensemble in a Competitive Field

Most experts predicted that “Wicked” or “Anora” would take the top film prize, but “Conclave”’s victory has shaken up the Oscar race with just one week remaining. It’s officially a competitive landscape!

Surprise: Two Major Winners Were Absent

Despite the brevity of the awards show, the absence of Smart (who was on a project) and Short (who was ill with COVID) was felt, particularly given their humor and eloquence in public speaking. While Short’s illness is unavoidable, couldn’t someone have asked Smart to record a message?

Snub: Stunt Awards Presented on the Red Carpet

In an effort to keep the SAG Awards around two hours, the show trimmed a lot of content, but it’s disheartening that stunt performers, who literally risk their lives for their craft, were overlooked. Couldn’t the show have extended by just ten minutes to give them their due recognition?

Surprise: The Red Carpet Fashion Was Underwhelming

With the major event happening next weekend, the red carpet showcased very few bold choices or standout looks. Additionally, many of the men appeared to be dressed like catering staff. Quite dull!

Surprise: Reunions Lacked Chemistry

You would hardly guess that “The X Files” and “New Girl” thrived on the charm of their casts after witnessing these awkward reunion segments. The chemistry simply wasn’t there!

Surprise: Ford’s Comedic Moment Steals the Show

Ford’s unintentional comedic timing was spot on as he prepared to take a large bite of an amuse-bouche while his “Shrinking” co-star was speaking during the show’s opening “I’m an actor” introduction. His awkward attempt to hide prompted the night’s biggest laugh. Perhaps Ford should consider hosting next year!
