In this interview, Ramy Katrib, Founder & CEO of Digital Film Tree, shares how his company evolved from a pioneering post-production house into a global infrastructure and collaboration platform. “To a Hollywood studio leader, I’d say we’re a post house on the surface—we do all the traditional things: geo-dailies, online, color, visual effects, deliverables. We even provide editorial and post systems. But our real focus is on the data—the underlying infrastructure that supports post-production. We’ve been building systems not just for ourselves, but for others to run their own post workflows.

To an international company, I’d explain that our mission is to use the internet to optimize production and post-production, particularly at the front end—right from when the creation begins. Many projects originate in Hollywood but shoot in tax incentive zones around the world. We collaborate with companies globally—not just for services but to fill infrastructure and technology gaps.

We’ve thrived by working with what might traditionally be considered competitors. We call it ‘co-opetition.’ For over 15 years, we’ve collaborated with vendors worldwide to deliver client needs, connecting them to trusted partners from Japan to Prague to the Middle East. We refer, vet, and build long-standing working relationships.”

Ramy Katrib:
“One great example is with Lucas and Jerry from PFX in Prague. We started connecting with them over visual effects, and it grew into a deeper partnership. If we’re overloaded, they’re top of mind. More recently, we’ve been using their infrastructure to sync servers for U.S.-based clients doing production in Europe. Sometimes, there’s no VFX work involved—it’s just pure data synchronization.

We’ve built enough trust that these relationships move fast. Within 24 hours, servers are synced and data is flowing securely. It’s proof that the right infrastructure and trust can solve big logistical challenges quickly.”

Ramy Katrib:
“The Global Post Network (GPN) is something we’ve organically built over the last 10–15 years. We’re now formalizing it. It’s a network of post vendors, specialists, and artists around the world—people and companies we’ve worked with, who share a commitment to quality, infrastructure, and collaboration.

It goes both ways: companies abroad may need editorial rooms or infrastructure in L.A., and we can provide that. Or we might have a need in Japan or Mexico and tap into our network. We’re also supporting freelancers, like colorists who’ve gone independent. Our ‘Color Collection’ brings top-tier colorists into the fold of GPN to keep them working, especially in a market where full-time roles are shrinking.”

Ramy Katrib:
“We integrate standard tools like Signiant Media Shuttle and customize workflows for dailies, editorial, VFX, and more. Whether it’s Frame.io, DAX, or private servers, we ensure raw camera data is centralized and made highly accessible.

That accessibility is critical. It’s not just onboarding—it’s whitelisting, governance, and hands-on support. We’ve built a multidisciplinary team that knows how to support VFX vendors, promo departments, and independent editors. Especially post-COVID, that infrastructure allowed us to scale remote operations when no one had frameworks for secure home-based post-production.”

Ramy Katrib:
“All three. Studios and streamers see us as a post house. But once they engage, they realize we offer more—connections to global vendors, a vetted network of collaborators, and a platform that brings experts together.

We might not always be the lead vendor, but we can jump in to solve infrastructure gaps or technical bottlenecks. When collaboration clicks, it’s magic—we operate like one extended team, even across multiple companies. That cultural alignment is key.”

Ramy Katrib:
“COVID accelerated our adoption. We’d already built infrastructure for remote post—secure home setups, routers, VPNs. When the pandemic hit, we were ahead of the curve and helped many vendors plug into our network. It was never about dominating the work; it was about helping others survive and collaborate.

This led to our expansion into Vancouver—because so many productions moved there. We partnered with Vaudeville, an audio house with a similar tech-forward ethos, and now have a formal entity there—Digital Film Tree ULC. Outside of L.A. and Vancouver, we rely on partners, not brick-and-mortar expansions.”

Ramy Katrib:
“We’re already active in places like Budapest (working with Ionart), Southeast Asia (with Salon Films), Japan, Korea, and the Middle East. Africa is especially exciting—we’d love to partner with companies in emerging markets like Morocco or Nigeria. We’ve done setups in Fiji, Puerto Rico, and are exploring Serbia and Marrakesh.

These are regions with increasing tax incentives but underdeveloped infrastructure. We help establish pop-up post setups—map internet providers, build secure workflows, and make things happen in days. It’s highly rewarding.”

Ramy Katrib:
“We’re deeply involved but don’t talk much about it. What I will say is: you can’t benefit from AI unless your data is governed. You need everything accessible, structured, and ready. Then AI becomes immensely powerful—whether it’s upscaling, remastering, or creative tools.

We’re using tools like Topaz, Copycat, and ML models in Nuke. AI lets us revisit old libraries, scan 16mm or 35mm at 12K, and restore them to 4K HDR with a modern look. It’s exciting to sit between the past and future—helping monetize decades-old content using cutting-edge tools.”

Ramy Katrib:
“Absolutely. We love working on libraries. Many distributors and broadcasters have LTO tapes sitting for 10–15 years. That data is at risk. We help ingest, restore, and transform that footage—resuscitate it, up-res it, and make it usable in today’s ecosystems.

We also advise on best practices for LTO handling and long-term storage. There’s so much value sitting idle, and we want to help unlock that.”

Ramy Katrib:
“We’re at a pivotal moment. Hollywood is hurting—but internationally, there’s growth. Countries are competing with tax credits, and stories are traveling like never before. Independent projects, private financing, and documentaries are seeing a resurgence.
