Strategic Acquisition by Mubi

Arthouse streamer Mubi has successfully acquired the acclaimed period drama series Mussolini: Son of the Century, directed by Joe Wright, from Fremantle for multiple territories, including North America.

Captivating Storyline and Performance

The series features Luca Marinelli (known for The Eight Mountains and The Old Guard) in the role of the titular tyrant. This gripping narrative, adapted from the documentary novel by Antonio Scurati, delves into Mussolini’s ascent to power and the emergence of fascism in Italy.

Insights from Joe Wright

“This series was a chance to explore how charisma and chaos can coexist in a single man—and how that dangerous combination can reshape a nation,” stated Joe Wright. “Luca Marinelli brings Mussolini’s volatility and magnetism to terrifying life. It was a privilege to work with such an extraordinary team on a story that feels both historical and disturbingly timeless.”

Expanding Global Reach

Mubi has also secured rights to Mussolini in Latin America, Belgium, Luxembourg, Turkey, India, and New Zealand as part of a multi-territory deal with Fremantle, which is overseeing worldwide sales. The series is produced by Sky Studios and Lorenzo Mieli for Fremantle subsidiary The Apartment Pictures. Mussolini premiered at the Venice Film Festival last year and was originally broadcast on Sky in Italy, the U.K., and Ireland.

Part of Mubi’s Expanding Collection

This 8-part limited series adds to Mubi’s growing collection of long-form dramas. The platform has been consistently enhancing its offerings by including selected series alongside feature films, such as Lars von Trier’s The Kingdom Trilogy, William Kentridge’s Self Portrait as a Coffee Pot, and the cult classic Twin Peaks (1990) along with its follow-up, Twin Peaks: A Limited Event Series (2017), which will debut on Mubi in select territories on June 13. Recently, Mubi also acquired Wong Kar Wai’s series, Blossoms Shanghai, for multiple territories.
