This film represents a collaborative effort among Palestine, Italy, and France.

Palestinian director Maha Haj’s short film Upshot has been chosen for the International Competition at the 47th Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival in France. The festival, scheduled from January 31 to February 8, will feature Haj’s work competing against esteemed international entries.

Upshot has already received significant recognition, winning the Golden Pardino at the 77th Locarno Film Festival and the Golden Star at the seventh El Gouna Film Festival.

Set against the backdrop of the ongoing crisis in Gaza, the film tells the story of Suleiman and Lubna, a grieving couple who seek refuge on a remote, foggy farm to escape their sorrow. Their fragile peace is shattered by an unexpected visitor, compelling them to confront a painful truth from their past.

Haj reflects on her film, stating: “Upshot serves as both a mourning and a testament to the unyielding strength of the human spirit. There are no simple solutions or political remedies to alleviate the suffering of parents who have lost everything. Thus, the narrative unfolds in a space that transcends time and place — a poignant exploration of an irreplaceable loss that knows no boundaries.”

Produced as a Palestinian-French-Italian collaboration, Upshot features Palestinian actors Mohammed Bakri, Areen Omari, and Amer Hlehel. The cinematography is crafted by Augustin Bonnet, with editing by Veronique Lange and production design led by Saher Dwairy. The film is produced by August Films in partnership with Hanna Atallah and Ronza Kamel. MAD World manages worldwide distribution, while MAD Distribution oversees its release in Arabic-speaking regions.

With a background in English and Arabic literature, Haj made her directorial debut with the short film Oranges, followed by the documentary Behind These Walls. With Upshot, she continues to create deeply resonant narratives that delve into themes of loss and resilience.

The Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival will take place from January 31 to February 8.
