YouTube TV and Paramount Global Reach Temporary Agreement Amid Ongoing Negotiations
YouTube TV and Paramount Global are currently in discussions over a new distribution deal, but they have managed to secure a short-term extension. This agreement allows the internet TV service to continue offering CBS and over 20 additional networks for the time being.
Financial Terms Under Scrutiny
The two companies are at odds over financial terms, with Paramount pushing for a rate increase. Their previous agreement lapsed at 11 p.m. ET on February 13.
YouTube TV Communicates with Subscribers
Following the expiration of the deadline, YouTube TV announced on X, “We’ve reached a short-term extension with Paramount to keep their content on YouTube TV. Subscribers continue to have access to Paramount channels, including CBS. We appreciate your patience as we continue to negotiate on your behalf.” A representative from Paramount confirmed this temporary extension.
YouTube TV’s Market Position
YouTube TV stands as the largest broadband-delivered subscription TV service in the U.S., boasting over 8 million customers, surpassing competitors like Hulu + Live TV and Dish’s Sling TV.
Channels at Risk
If a long-term agreement is not reached, YouTube TV subscribers could lose access to a variety of channels, including CBS stations nationwide, CBS Sports Network, BET, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, MTV, TV Land, Paramount Network, CMT, and VH1. Additionally, recorded Paramount content and add-on subscriptions to Paramount+ with Showtime and BET+ would also be affected.
Paramount’s Customer Alerts
Paramount began notifying customers about the potential blackout on Wednesday, emphasizing that it provides “some of the most-watched programming in YouTube TV households.”
Allegations of Unfair Pressure
Paramount, currently finalizing an $8 billion merger with Skydance Media, has accused YouTube TV of attempting to pressure them into accepting unfavorable terms. They claim that YouTube TV is prioritizing its own interests over a fair agreement and that they have proposed renewal terms at a fair price.
YouTube TV’s Commitment to Subscribers
YouTube TV has expressed its commitment to reaching a fair agreement with Paramount, aiming to retain channels like CBS and CBS Sports without imposing additional costs on subscribers.
Customer Compensation and Alternatives
In the event that Paramount’s content becomes “unavailable for an extended period,” YouTube TV has informed customers they can claim an $8 credit at tv.youtube.com. Additionally, users can still access Paramount shows and movies by subscribing to Paramount+, starting at $7.99/month.
Recent Price Adjustments
YouTube TV recently increased its base price by $10 per month, effective January 13, 2025, raising it from $72.99 to $82.99 per month.
Industry Context of Programming Standoffs
Programming disputes have been a recurring theme in the pay-TV industry, yet YouTube TV has largely avoided significant blackouts. In 2021, they experienced a brief two-day blackout of ESPN and other Disney channels before reaching an agreement.
Paramount’s Recent Deals
Over the past year, Paramount has successfully negotiated new multiyear agreements with the two largest U.S. cable operators—Comcast in January and Charter Communications last May—both of which include rights to offer Paramount+ as part of their services.
