Wētā FX, the acclaimed Academy Award-winning visual effects company behind cinematic landmarks such as The Lord of the Rings, Avatar: The Way of Water, and the recent Better Man, is expanding its Australian headquarters in Melbourne. This move will create up to 80 new jobs and further position Victoria as a global hub for creative and cultural production.

Originally operating from a temporary facility during production of Better Man—Victoria’s largest-ever film project—Wētā FX has now committed to a permanent base in Melbourne. Inspired by the success of the project, which generated nearly 3,000 jobs and injected $142 million into the local economy, the studio’s expansion marks a strategic investment in Victoria’s growing screen sector.

Wētā FX’s expanded presence will significantly bolster local capabilities in VFX and animation, making Victoria even more attractive to international film and television productions. The move also supports the growth of Australian-made content, with the Melbourne hub offering cutting-edge post-production resources for a range of projects.

The Victorian Government has actively supported the growth of the creative industries, including the recent facilitation of Spanish production company Fever’s ANZ headquarters in Melbourne. The expansion of Wētā FX aligns with the state’s newly released Economic Growth Statement, which outlines initiatives to attract major global investments and expand employment opportunities across key industries.

With Hollywood recognition and a track record of visual storytelling innovation, Wētā FX’s continued investment in Melbourne enhances Victoria’s global standing in film production and post-production. The growing hub is expected to attract further international collaborations while empowering local talent and creative businesses.
