SCAD Expands Film Studio Backlot

Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Georgia has initiated the second phase of its film studio backlot expansion.

New Facilities and Features

The 11-acre expansion, which is being developed in three phases, now features a backlot, cutting-edge production facilities, modern costume design sewing labs, classrooms, an LED volume stage for virtual productions, a hair and makeup studio, and an extensive, high-tech prop-making shop equipped with tools for woodcutting, welding, and painting.

Commitment to Industry-Ready Talent

In an interview with Variety, SCAD President Paula Wallace emphasized, “This costume-and-production expansion of the SCAD Backlot and Savannah Film Studios transcends mere additional square footage; it underscores SCAD’s dedication to nurturing industry-ready talent. The new facility, designed specifically for our esteemed degree program, equips students with the advanced technology they will encounter in professional production studios, thereby enhancing their preparedness for careers in costume design and related fields.”

Dedicated Costume Design Space

Approximately 3,700 square feet is allocated for costume design and creation. This area includes a sewing classroom, a sewing lab, conference rooms for mentorship and collaboration, a wood and metal shop, and a specialized costume storage area featuring an industrial garment conveyor. Wallace noted, “Building 3 enables larger teams of costume designers to collaborate effectively on projects, while the increased storage capacity provides an accessible archive of costumes, accessories, props, and set materials to inspire creativity and enhance production value.” She also highlighted that students will benefit from easy access to premier tools and opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.

Facility Background

The facility, originally a 22,000-square-foot meatpacking plant, was opened in 2014.

Enhancing Production Quality

Wallace stated, “This community of state-of-the-art facilities elevates production quality and cultivates a dynamic environment where collaboration flourishes, ensuring that SCAD students and alumni excel in all facets of the industry.”

Future Developments

By the 2025-26 academic year, two industry-ready soundstages and 11 classrooms will be completed. The third phase of the backlot will include a police station, a fully constructed single-family home, a town square, and additional features.
