Saudi Film Commission Launches Initiative to Promote Art Cinema

The Saudi Film Commission has introduced a new initiative aimed at bolstering art cinema, emphasizing its essential contribution to cultural enrichment and the development of creative talent. This program features a range of local and international workshops and cinematic events designed to inspire innovative storytelling and convey profound cultural narratives that extend beyond conventional commercial films, as reported by Asharq Al-Awsat.

In Saudi Arabia, 27 participants took part in 10 workshops organized in collaboration with 11 different entities in Jeddah. On the global front, the commission conducted workshops in Berlin, where 11 trainees were exposed to the latest cinema trends through interactions with prominent organizations. These initiatives are part of a comprehensive strategy to ensure the longevity of art cinema by nurturing local talent and encouraging collaboration among filmmakers.

Korean Film Week in Riyadh

A key feature of this initiative was the inaugural Korean Film Week, held in Riyadh from January 19 to 23 at Cinehouse. Sponsored by the Film Commission, this event provided a distinctive platform for exploring Korean culture through film, thereby strengthening cultural connections between Saudi Arabia and South Korea.

Attendees had the opportunity to watch acclaimed Korean films such as Cobweb and Parasite, along with participating in interactive discussions on topics like “The Global Appeal of Korean Cinema” and the impact of Korean culture on the film industry. The event also included seminars featuring film directors and international experts, fostering cultural dialogue and creative exchange.

These initiatives reflect the Film Commission’s commitment to broadening Saudi Arabia’s cinematic landscape, creating avenues for filmmakers to present their work, and establishing the country as a global center for cinematic innovation and cultural collaboration.
