Exciting New Coproduction in Animation
Spanish production company Peekaboo Animation (I, Elvis Riboldi) and Italian audio postproduction studio RainFrog (Topo Gigio) have officially entered into a coproduction agreement for a fresh animated adaptation of The Triplets. This project is based on the beloved characters created by Catalan writer-illustrator Roser Capdevila. Notably, RAI, the Italian public broadcaster, will join as a commissioning partner, enhancing the project’s credibility and reach.
Expanding Collaborations
In a further development, Peekaboo has also signed a second coproduction deal with Sardinha em Lata, a studio based in Lisbon, Portugal. The broadcast rights for this territory have been secured by the public broadcaster RTP, ensuring a robust distribution strategy.
Industry Insights
“We’re incredibly excited to be part of this remarkable project that will revive such an iconic property in a brand-new animated series,” shares Giuseppe Franchi, CEO of RainFrog. “This show captivated countless children in the ‘90s in Italy, including us, and RAI is the ideal partner to introduce original stories and unforgettable adventures to new generations.”
Nuno Beato, Producer/CEO of Sardinha em Lata, emphasizes, “Our collaboration on a well-established brand is crucial for enhancing our company’s international presence and marks a significant milestone in the evolution of animation production in Portugal.”
Strategic Partnerships
The partnerships with Italy and Portugal were expertly negotiated by broker and executive producer Trini Cuevas. They complement a strong lineup of coproducers and commissioners for the project, including public stations RTVE and 3CAT in Spain, with backing from the Catalan Institute of Cultural Companies (ICEC).
Production Timeline
Production is slated to commence in Autumn 2025, kicking off with an initial season of 26 episodes, each 11 minutes long. The international release is anticipated by early 2027, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of The Triplets‘ debut on Catalan TV. This new adaptation aims to produce a total of two seasons (52 episodes), building on the classic series’ remarkable global success, which reached over 160 countries.
Storyline and Themes
The Triplets follows the adventures of Anna, Helena, and Teresa, three imaginative sisters who are magically whisked away to various times and places through their play. Throughout their journeys, they meet a diverse array of historical and fictional characters, embarking on countless adventures alongside the Bored Witch.
This new animated adaptation will focus on themes of helping others, resolving conflicts, and overcoming challenges through teamwork. The stories will be rooted in core values such as diversity, inclusivity, positivity, respect, and girls’ empowerment, all presented within a comedic framework. The updated designs and format will cater to the preferences of today’s young audiences, offering a contemporary twist while preserving the essence of the classic characters.
Commitment to Legacy
“We are dedicated to honoring the legacy of The Triplets while infusing fresh creativity and innovation into this new version of the show,” states Javier Galán, Co-Founder & Producer at Peekaboo.
“It’s a challenge and a significant responsibility that we are excited to embrace,” adds Iván Agenjo, also a Co-Founder & Producer for Peekaboo. “We are confident that we have partnered with the right collaborators for this project, who will help us craft a new classic for audiences in Spain and beyond.”
