The Langley-based LED volume studio has built a strong reputation among filmmakers for its cost-effective virtual car process and location solutions – all while allowing filmmakers to take advantage of BC’s generous production incentives.
Now, Lumostage has taken its capabilities to the next level with Canada’s only standing subway train set—a fully dressed, film-ready environment that can be integrated directly into the studio’s LED volume. The subway car, a decommissioned Translink Mark I SkyTrain car, has been carefully refitted by some of British Columbia’s top FX engineers and art department professionals to double as a New York City-style subway car. When paired with Lumostage’s immersive LED tunnel environments, the result is a one-stop solution for film, television, and commercial productions filming any subway or transit scene.
“Filming subway scenes has always been a challenge in British Columbia,” says Lumostage Co-Founder Angus Luk-Ramsay. “Until now, productions had to build a temporary set or endure weeks of permit headaches to film on an active Skytrain platform. Our standing subway set not only solves that problem, but makes British Columbia an even more attractive destination for productions.”
The new subway set complements Lumostage’s growing suite of in-camera VFX and virtual location offerings, including the company’s INT. CAR System—a virtual car process workflow that uses spherical driving plates for car process work. Unlike traditional LED wall setups that rely on flat or limited background projections, spherical content provides filmmakers with true 360° coverage, allowing for wider angles, more dynamic camera movement, and a level of realism that’s difficult to achieve with green screen or rear projection.
From moody late-night cityscapes to fast-moving chase sequences, the system gives directors and cinematographers unprecedented control over lighting, reflections, and environmental continuity—all on a secure soundstage minutes from downtown Vancouver.
With its combination of innovative technology, experienced crew, and location in BC’s tax credit zone, Lumostage offers productions a powerful blend of creativity and efficiency. Whether shooting a car interior, a subway ride, or a fully virtual world, the team’s focus remains the same: helping filmmakers achieve beautiful images on limited budgets.
