Netflix to Invest $1 Billion in Mexico Over Next Four Years

Introduction

Netflix is set to deepen its presence in Mexico with a $1 billion investment over the next four years, producing around 20 films and TV series annually. The announcement, made by Co-CEO Ted Sarandos at President Claudia Sheinbaum’s press conference, highlights the streaming giant’s commitment to Latin America’s creative sector and economic growth.

Boosting Jobs and Economic Growth

President Sheinbaum emphasized the film industry’s role in job creation beyond immediate production needs, citing benefits to hospitality, fashion, and tourism. “It’s not only important for Mexico to be seen in the world, but also because of the economic development and jobs generated by a production,” she stated.

Netflix’s Track Record in Mexican Storytelling

Netflix has already left its mark on Mexican storytelling with productions like “Club de Cuervos,” Alfonso Cuarón’s Oscar-winning “Roma,” and last year’s adaptation of “Pedro Páramo.” Sarandos noted that “Pedro Páramo” required the support of hundreds of artists and musicians, with over 5,000 traditional textile items created for the production, ultimately tripling book sales.

Our journey in Mexico so far has taken us from North to South — from Baja California’s sunset shores to the Caribbean’s sunrise sands. We have produced in over 50 locations across 25 states. And with this renewed commitment, we look forward to deepening our partnership even more.” said Ted Sarandos, Co-CEO.

Expanding Collaborations and Developing Talent

Netflix is also expanding collaborations, including an agreement with Mexico City’s Estudios Churubusco, one of Latin America’s longest-running film studios. Additionally, Sarandos announced plans to fund programs that help behind-the-camera talent break into the industry. Mexico’s diverse landscapes further solidify its appeal as a key filming destination for Netflix’s global productions.
