Netflix Breaks Ground on $903 Million Production Studio in New Jersey

Monmouth County, NJ — May 13, 2025 — Netflix is set to begin construction on a state-of-the-art film and television production complex at the historic Fort Monmouth site in New Jersey, transforming the former Army base into a global media hub.

Groundbreaking Ceremony to Mark a Major Milestone

A private groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, marking the official launch of the project’s first phase. The event will be attended by Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos, alongside senior New Jersey state officials, including representatives from Governor Phil Murphy’s administration, who have championed the project from its inception.

Ambitious Studio Plans for a Historic Site

The new Netflix studio will span 289 acres across the Eatontown and Oceanport communities and feature 12 soundstages totaling nearly 500,000 square feet. Additional facilities will include production offices, retail spaces, a cafeteria, studio trailer parks, a helipad, a hotel, a theater, visitor attractions, and water tanks for film shoots.

The project will unfold in two phases, with initial construction focused on a 29-acre section known as the McAfee Zone. Phase one will deliver four soundstages and a production campus. Phase two — to be reviewed in August — will complete the remaining eight soundstages.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

Netflix projects the studio will generate approximately 3,500 construction jobs and create 1,400 permanent positions upon full operation. Over a 20-year period, the studio is expected to contribute between $3.8 billion and $4.6 billion to the New Jersey economy.

The company will have access to $150 million in tax incentives and a potential 40% tax credit, under the condition that it operates in New Jersey for a minimum of 10 years.

Reviving the Birthplace of Film

The Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority (FMERA) played a pivotal role in enabling the studio’s development by amending zoning regulations to allow for large-scale production use. The site, a former military communications hub and home of FM radio development, has been largely vacant for over a decade.
