NEP Australia, a division of NEP Group, has introduced a new outside broadcast (OB) facility designed to support the broadcast industry’s transition to hybrid workflows that blend advanced software solutions with traditional hardware.
The latest OB unit, known as HG 31 within NEP’s global fleet, features an innovative technical design aimed at major event productions, including those for the NRL, AFL, and NBL. This new approach marks a significant shift from conventional OB infrastructure.
HG 31 is equipped with just three racks of IT and networking equipment, which manage all video and audio processing, routing, and monitoring. Instead of relying on traditional onboard production systems, all production operations are handled remotely through NEP’s connected hub network. This includes the NEP Andrews Hubs in Melbourne and Sydney, as well as the NEP Production Hub in Auckland.
The unit combines traditional hardware control surfaces with software-driven touchscreens, allowing for flexible workflows on-site. These workflows are synchronized with full hardware-based mixing boards or audio consoles located in remote production control rooms. This setup enables production and engineering teams to switch seamlessly between software and physical interfaces as their needs evolve, making HG 31 one of the most adaptable OB units developed by NEP.
This compact, software-focused OB unit, working in conjunction with offsite production facilities, represents a first for high-profile live productions. The initiative supports NEP’s ongoing strategy to deliver flexible, scalable, and software-defined media solutions that meet the changing requirements of broadcasters and rights holders.
Dan Murphy, Vice President of NEP Platform, who leads NEP Group’s global software platform development, commented, “This is another milestone for NEP in advancing our software solutions, providing broadcasters with the flexibility to scale production processes and configurations as needed, all within a single, user-friendly platform. Our tradition of integrating top-tier technology continues, and the growth of software processing gives our customers even more options to adapt quickly as production needs change.”
NEP’s journey into software-led broadcast solutions began nearly ten years ago with the development of TFC, the company’s all-in-one broadcast control, orchestration, and infrastructure platform. TFC is designed to simplify the management of complex IP workflows by uniting hardware and software systems into a single, intuitive control environment for live production teams. Today, TFC supports live productions in over 120 NEP facilities and OB units worldwide and is available for use by rights holders, leagues, federations, news organizations, and streaming platforms within their own operations.
