Exciting New Drama Series: Miss Austen

The BBC has just unveiled a captivating trailer for its upcoming drama series Miss Austen, featuring the talented Keeley Hawes (known for Bodyguard, Line of Duty, and It’s A Sin) in the role of Cassandra Austen, Jane Austen’s sister. The series is set to premiere on Sunday, February 2.

For our U.S. audience, the series will debut on Masterpiece on PBS starting Sunday, May 4.

All four episodes will be available on the BBC iPlayer streaming service from 6 a.m. London time on launch day, with weekly episodes airing on BBC One that evening. This adaptation is based on Gill Hornby’s best-selling novel and is produced by Bonnie Productions in collaboration with the BBC for Masterpiece.

Miss Austen is brought to life by BAFTA-winning writer Andrea Gibb (known for Elizabeth Is Missing and Mayflies). The series explores a literary mystery surrounding Cassandra Austen’s infamous act of burning her sister Jane’s letters, transforming it into a compelling narrative of sisterly love, while presenting Cassandra as a character as intriguing as any Austen heroine.

The newly released trailer showcases Hawes as Cassandra “Cassy” Austen, highlighting her deep bond and unwavering loyalty to her sister, Jane. It also features flashbacks of Young Cassy (played by Synnøve Karlsen) and Jane Austen (portrayed by Patsy Ferran</strong)), as they navigate the complexities of romantic infatuations, female friendships, and unfulfilled dreams that shaped their lives and inspired Jane’s timeless stories.

The drama kicks off in 1830, years after Jane’s passing. Cassandra rushes to assist Isabella (played by Rose Leslie), the niece of her late fiancé, who faces losing her home after her father’s death. While Cassandra’s stated purpose is to help Isabella, her true intention is to uncover a hidden collection of private letters that could tarnish Jane’s legacy if they fall into the wrong hands. Upon discovering the letters, Cassandra is swept back to her youth, filled with nostalgia and emotion.

The impressive cast of Miss Austen also includes Phyllis Logan (from Downton Abbey and Shetland), Max Irons (known for Condor and The Wife), Alfred Enoch (from How to Get Away with Murder and Foundation), Jessica Hynes (from Life After Life and Years and Years), Mirren Mack (from The Witcher: Blood Origin and The Nest), Kevin McNally (from The Crown and Ten Percent), Calam Lynch (from Bridgerton and Sweetpea), and Liv Hill (from The Serpent Queen and Elizabeth Is Missing).

Directed by BAFTA award-winning filmmaker Aisling Walsh (known for Maudie and Elizabeth Is Missing), the series is produced by Stella Merz (from Gentleman Jack and Renegade Nell).

Miss Austen is a co-production between Bonnie Productions and Masterpiece, in partnership with the BBC and Federation Stories. The executive producers include Christine Langan for Bonnie Productions, Susanne Simpson for Masterpiece, and Polly Williams for Federation Stories, with Hawes, Gibb, and Walsh also serving as executive producers. Federation Studios will handle international distribution of the series.

This year marks the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth, making the release of Miss Austen particularly timely and significant. Be sure to check out the trailer below!
