Love Jones Alums Nia Long & Larenz Tate Reteaming On Netflix Romantic Drama From Sylvies Loves Eugene Ashe

EXCLUSIVE: Nia Long and Larenz Tate, stars of New Line’s romantic drama Love Jones, who have more recently worked together on Lionsgate’s Michael Jackson biopic Michael, are set to reteam once again on an untitled romantic drama from Sylvie’s Love helmer Eugene Ashe that has been greenlighted at Netflix.

Inspired by Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite, the debut album from R&B artist Maxwell, the film’s logline is being kept under wraps. Ashe is directing from a script written with Kay Oyegun, a writer-producer best known for work on NBC’s This Is Us.

James Lopez, Charles D. King, and Poppy Hanks are producing for Macro Film Studios, with Maxwell, John D. Hammond, Long, and Tate serving as executive producers. Sources said the project was shopped to Netflix after being put into turnaround at Amazon.

Marking the feature debut of Theodore Witcher, Long and Tate’s cult classic Love Jones is a ’90s Chicago story chronicling the burgeoning romance between Darius Lovehall, a young poet and novelist played by Tate, and Nina Mosley, a photographer portrayed by Long. In Antoine Fuqua’s Michael, slated for release on April 24, 2026, Long plays Jackson family matriarch Katherine, with Tate as Motown Records’ Berry Gordy.

Recently seen in titles like Missing, You People, and The Best Man: The Final Chapters, Long is repped by Brecheen Feldman Breimer.

Most recently seen playing the role of Councilman Tate in the hit Starz series Power and spin-off Power Book II: Ghost, Tate is repped by Independent Artist Group and attorney John Meigs.

Ashe earned his first Emmy nomination for Sylvie’s Love, a period romantic drama starring Tessa Thompson and Nnamdi Asomugha that premiered on Prime Video after launching out of Sundance. He is repped by CAA, Anonymous Content, and Granderson Des Rochers.

Currently writing on, exec producing and co-showrunning Apple TV+ limited series Imperfect Women under her overall deal with 20th Television, Oyegun was previously both a writer and an executive producer on This Is Us. She is repped by Underground and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman.
