20th Century Studios Takes on The Devil in the White City
20th Century Studios has officially acquired the long-awaited film adaptation of The Devil in the White City.
Currently in development, the project is generating buzz with Leonardo DiCaprio in discussions to star and Martin Scorsese in talks to direct. This film draws inspiration from Erik Larson’s acclaimed 2003 true-crime nonfiction book of the same name.
At this stage, the project is still in its infancy and does not yet have a script. The producing team includes DiCaprio, Scorsese, Stacey Sher, Rick Yorn, and Jennifer Davisson.
Larson’s best-selling book, The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America, is set in late 19th-century Chicago and intricately weaves the stories of World’s Fair architect Daniel Burnham and notorious serial killer H.H. Holmes.
Back in 2010, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that DiCaprio was working on a film adaptation through his production company, Appian Way, with an interest in portraying Holmes himself.
Prior to this, Kathryn Bigelow was attached to direct an earlier version, while another iteration featured Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner in key roles.
In 2019, Hulu began developing the book as a series, initially with Keanu Reeves set to star and Todd Field directing the first two episodes. DiCaprio and Scorsese were also on board as producers. However, in 2023, the streaming service confirmed that the series would not proceed.
Overseeing the feature for the studio will be David Greenbaum, President of Disney Live Action and 20th Century Studios, alongside Steve Abell, Production President, and Sarah Shepard, Senior VP of Production.
Scorsese and DiCaprio have a rich history of successful collaborations, including Killers of the Flower Moon, The Wolf of Wall Street, Shutter Island, The Departed, The Aviator, and Gangs of New York.
Looking ahead, DiCaprio’s next project is an untitled feature from Paul Thomas Anderson, set for release by Warner Bros. later this year.
Deadline was the first to report on 20th Century’s involvement in this exciting project.
