In a thrilling announcement, Disney CEO Robert Iger has confirmed that director Lee Unkrich and co-director Adrian Molina are reuniting at Pixar to create Coco 2, a sequel to their acclaimed 2017 animated feature, Coco. This much-anticipated film is set to grace theaters in 2029.

 

The news broke during The Walt Disney Company’s annual shareholders meeting, where Iger expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart, and adventure. And we can’t wait to share more soon.”

 

The project will be produced by the Oscar-winning Mark Nielsen, known for his work on Toy Story 4 and Inside Out 2.

 

For those unfamiliar, Disney and Pixar’s Coco follows the journey of Miguel, a 12-year-old aspiring musician who defies his family’s long-standing ban on music. His adventure leads him to the vibrant Land of the Dead, where he uncovers the truth about his family history. The original film garnered two Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song (“Remember Me”), along with a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Animated, a BAFTA for Best Animated Film, and several critics’ choice awards.

 

This sequel not only promises to build on the rich legacy of its predecessor but also highlights the ongoing commitment of Disney and Pixar to deliver compelling stories that resonate with audiences worldwide.
