Jasmila Zbanic’s Upcoming Sequel: A Focus on the Aftermath of Srebrenica

Acclaimed filmmaker Jasmila Zbanic is set to develop a sequel to her Oscar-nominated drama Quo Vadis, Aida?, which poignantly addresses the Srebrenica massacre. This new installment will delve into the aftermath of the tragic genocidal events that unfolded in Bosnia in 1995.

Exploring the Lives of Survivors

Titled Quo Vadis, Aida? — The Missing Part, the sequel will follow the harrowing journey of the women left behind after the Bosnian Serb forces, led by commander Ratko Mladic, brutally murdered over 7,000 civilians, predominantly men and boys, in one of the most horrific episodes of the Bosnian War. Jasna Djuricic will reprise her role as Aida, a local translator for the UN peacekeeping forces who desperately tried to save her husband and sons from the massacre. Now, she is at the forefront of the fight to uncover the truth behind these atrocities and hold those responsible accountable.

Acknowledging Past Successes

Quo Vadis, Aida? made its debut at the Venice Film Festival in 2020, earning two BAFTA nominations and winning the best film award at the European Film Awards, in addition to receiving an Academy Award nomination for best international feature. The sequel, Quo Vadis, Aida? — The Missing Part, will be produced by Damir Ibrahimovic of Bosnian company Deblokada, in collaboration with Erik Hemmendorff from Sweden’s Plattform Produktion, along with Swedish film financier Film i Väst.

Exciting Projects on the Horizon

This announcement was part of the lineup revealed during Film i Väst’s annual lunch at the Cannes Film Festival. Other notable projects in their upcoming slate include Good Mothers, a small-town melodrama directed by Amalie Næsby Fick, based on a bestselling novel and featuring Danish stars Sidse Babett Knudsen and Sofie Gråbøl. Additionally, the animated feature Dante, directed by Linda Hambäck, boasts a voice cast led by Stellan Skarsgård and David Dencik. Another highlight is Bad Moon Rising, a romantic drama directed by Erik Poppe, based on an original screenplay by Nobel Prize-winning writer Jon Fosse.

Supporting Diverse Narratives

Other films backed by Film i Väst include Bloody Men, a literary adaptation featuring Swedish talents Aliette Opheim and Filip Berg; Burden of Justice, directed by Lisa Linnertorp; and Will You Care if I Die?, based on Nicolas Lunabba’s autobiographical bestseller, directed by Rojda Sekersöz.

Expanding Global Reach

Film i Väst has also announced its involvement in Fjord, the English-language debut of Palme d’Or-winning Romanian director Christian Mungiu, featuring Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve. This project has already been pre-purchased by Neon for North American release.

Operating studios in Trollhättan, Sweden, Film i Väst is a key player in this year’s Cannes competition, supporting three films: The History of Sound by Oliver Hermanus, featuring Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor; Sentimental Value by Joachim Trier, starring Reinsve and Skarsgård; and Eagles of the Republic by Tarik Saleh, featuring Fares Fares.
