Animation lovers and cinephiles can now stream the award-winning short In the Shadow of the Cypress for free for a limited time. The film, directed by Iranian filmmaking duo Shirin Sohani and Hossein Molayemi, recently debuted online as a Vimeo Staff Pick. This intimate family drama is one of the animated shorts eligible for the Academy Awards this year.

Synopsis: The story follows a former captain suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder who lives with his daughter in a humble house by the sea. They lead an isolated life and face the challenges of a harsh existence. Despite the captain’s desire to be a caring father, he struggles to connect with his daughter. One morning, their lives are forever changed by an unexpected event, which could either bring hope or additional burden.

 

Molayemi and Sohani collaborated on the writing, directing, and production of the short, as well as working on storyboards, animatics, and layout. Molayemi also handled character designs and editing and was part of the animation team, while Sohani focused on composition, background design, and color styling.

 

In the Shadow of the Cypress has received four Oscar-qualifying awards at various festivals, including the Grand Jury Prize at Animayo (Spain), Best Animation at LA Shorts Fest, Best Short Film (International Animation) at Lebu International Film Festival (Chile), and Best Animated Short at Tribeca Film Festival and Spark Animation.
