HBO has officially ordered an eight-episode limited series titled “The Chain”, with Damon Lindelof serving as writer and executive producer. The project marks the first collaboration under Lindelof’s two-year overall deal with HBO, which began in September 2025. The series is being produced in partnership with Media Res.
Based on Adrian McKinty’s 2019 best-selling novel, “The Chain” is a suspenseful thriller centered on a mother who is forced to kidnap another child to secure the release of her own kidnapped daughter. Lindelof is set to expand on the novel’s original mythology for the adaptation.
“From the moment I heard the wild and original premise of Adrian’s book, I was shocked, surprised, and a little envious I hadn’t thought of it myself,” Lindelof commented. “I’ve always wanted to adapt a great thriller, and this story has all the dark, exhilarating elements that inspire me.”
The pilot story is developed by Lindelof, Carly Wray, and Breannah Gibson, with Lindelof and Wray co-writing the pilot script. Lindelof will also take on the role of showrunner, his first time in this position since HBO’s “Watchmen.” He will executive produce alongside Shane Salerno. Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer will executive produce for Media Res, while McKinty will serve as co-executive producer.
Francesca Orsi, EVP of HBO Programming and Head of HBO Drama Series and Films, stated, “We are honored by our continued partnership with Damon Lindelof, one of the most distinctive creators of our time. ‘The Chain’ promises to further his legacy of exploring the depths of the human mind and delivering emotionally daring, transformative storytelling.”
