“I’m gonna get outta here, and when I do I’m gonna look after ya…” Transmission Films has unveiled the main official trailer for Spit, which is indeed the film’s title. David Wenham portrays the notorious criminal John Francis “Spit” Spitieri in Jonathan Teplitzky’s production, set to premiere in Australia next March. This film serves as a sequel to the acclaimed crime comedy Gettin’ Square. In the narrative, ex-junkie John Spitieri returns to Australia, only to be detained in an Immigration Detention Centre, facing threats from old rivals intent on settling past grievances. As Johnny engages in conversations that lack substance, he forms bonds with fellow detainees and imparts his interpretation of camaraderie. The cast also features Helen Thomson, David Field, David Roberts, Gary Sweet, Arlo Green, Ayik Daniel Chut Deng, Sam & Teagan Rybka, and Sami Afuni. While it may not resonate with audiences outside Australia, it presents a quirky and eccentric crime story reminiscent of Trainspotting. It’s worth a look.

As ex-junkie Johnny “Spit” Spitieri arrives in Australia with a faulty passport, he finds himself incarcerated in an Immigration Detention Centre. Authorities are eager to uncover his identity and whereabouts, while gangster Chicka Martin and his corrupt associate, Arne Deviers, pursue Spit. Meanwhile, the Independent Public Integrity Commission suspects that the confused amnesiac could be an improbable criminal genius. As Johnny fills conversations with empty rhetoric, he forges new friendships among the detainees, educating them on his version of mateship and the essence of being truly Australian… Spit is helmed by Australian writer/filmmaker Jonathan Teplitzky, known for directing films such as Better Than Sex, Gettin’ Square, Burning Man, The Railway Man, and Churchill, along with numerous TV series episodes recently. The screenplay is authored by Chris Nyst, with production led by Greg Duffy, Trish Lake, and David Wenham. Transmission Films plans to release Teplitzky’s Spit in Australian cinemas beginning March 6th, 2025. There are currently no announced US release dates.
