Cercamon Launches Vorteks: A New Genre Label
Based in Dubai, the sales agency Cercamon has introduced Vorteks, an innovative genre label that spans a wide range of films including horror, sci-fi, thriller, fantasy, dark comedy, and action. Vorteks aims to manage 8-10 feature films annually, with David Kwok, the former director of programming for the Tribeca Film Festival’s first ten editions, at the helm. As a partner at Vorteks, Kwok will lead the charge in acquisitions and sales.
Focus on Emerging Talent
“With a special emphasis on emerging talent, the label’s dynamic slate will showcase the remarkable new voices emerging from the genre community,” Kwok stated.
First Acquisition: Ancestral Beasts
A prime example of Vorteks’ commitment is its inaugural acquisition, “Ancestral Beasts,” the second feature from Canadian writer-director-producer Riedel (“Jackstones”). This compelling narrative follows an Indigenous woman grappling with trauma and was highlighted as one of the standout projects at the Cannes Frontières Platform’s Proof of Concept session on May 17.
Expanding Genre Focus
Cercamon ventured into the genre space at last year’s Cannes, acquiring Michael Felker’s sci-fi thriller “Things Will Be Different,” which premiered in the Midnighter section at SXSW. Additionally, it secured Stuart Ortiz’s faux documentary horror “Strange Harvest: Occult Murder in the Inland Empire” following its world premiere at Fantastic Fest.
Incorporating Award-Winning Films
Both of these films will be integrated into Vorteks, alongside Kike Narcea’s Spanish-language action film “I’ll Crush Y’all” (“Os Reviento”), which won an audience award at Sitges and Fantastic Fest.
