Let’s hear it straight from Craig: The AI Revolution in Dubbing and Subtitling

Craig explains, “There are so many tools out there that can, that say, um, just give us five minutes of your voice and we’ll be able to create your avatar in 20 languages. And you can almost have like a Tower of Babel translation dynamically even.”

Beyond Translation: AI and Cultural Adaptation

But here’s where it gets really interesting. Craig points out that localization technology isn’t just about word-for-word translation. It’s about cultural nuances too.

“There are challenges in terms of cultural sensitivity of translations,”

Craig notes. “What we discovered… there were historical translations of the original books that you would want to preserve in that language that don’t come through in more modern translations.”

The Human Touch in AI Localization

Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Is AI going to put voice actors out of business?”

Not so fast! Craig revealed that there’s still a crucial role for humans in this high-tech process.

“The adaptation piece is much more nuanced,”

Craig emphasizes. “They do song replacements, even song rewrites. They have to avoid certain sensitivities, certain words.”

It’s not all smooth sailing in the world of AI localization.

Craig points out some hurdles:

  • Talent and guild relations
  • Cultural sensitivity
  • Job market concerns
  • Adapting non-dialogue elements like music and sound

The Future of Global Entertainment

According to Craig, AI in entertainment localization is opening up new possibilities for global content.

“If the choice is not to have it at all in your local language versus have it in your local language, not being perfect. That is actually a lot of people would argue that’s preferable.”
