Hulu Cancels Adaptation of “A Court of Thorns and Roses”
Hulu’s highly anticipated TV adaptation of Sarah J. Maas’s immensely popular romantasy series, “A Court of Thorns and Roses,” has been officially scrapped.
Developed by Disney’s 20th Television, this project had been in the works at Hulu (also under the Disney umbrella) since March 2021. Maas collaborated with “Outlander” creator Ronald D. Moore on the scripts for the “ACOTAR” series, as fans affectionately refer to it.
Updates on the series have been sparse, particularly due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes in Summer 2023, which halted nearly all scripted production and development.
In February, TVLine reported that the “A Court of Thorns and Roses” series was no longer in active development at Hulu and was not being pitched to other platforms. Sources indicated to Variety that while the show was technically still in the pipeline, it was no longer actively progressing, with Disney’s 20th Television holding the rights until late Summer 2025.
According to insiders, Maas is considering taking the adaptation rights for “ACOTAR” to a different studio and platform once the option with Disney expires.
Both 20th Television and Hulu have declined to comment, and representatives for Maas have yet to respond to Variety’s inquiries.
The first book in the “A Court of Thorns and Roses” series, which follows 19-year-old huntress Feyre Archeron, was published in May 2015. After killing a faerie wolf in the woods, she is taken to the enchanting land of Prythian by Tamlin, one of the seven High Lords of the realm. During her time at Tamlin’s estate in the spring court, Feyre uncovers the truth about the faerie world, which challenges everything she thought she knew.
Following the success of the initial novel, Maas released four sequels: “A Court of Mist and Fury,” “A Court of Wings and Ruin,” “A Court of Frost and Starlight,” and “A Court of Silver Flames.” A sixth installment is planned, although no release date has been announced yet.
