Advanced HDR by Technicolor has announced that its high dynamic range (HDR) technology is now integrated into NextGen TV (ATSC 3.0) receivers from BitRouter and Zinwell. The ZapperBox, manufactured by BitRouter, supports both NextGen TV (ATSC 3.0) and ATSC 1.0, providing viewers with enhanced image quality and a smooth transition from standard dynamic range (SDR) to HDR for free over-the-air broadcasts.

Gopal Miglani, founder and president of BitRouter, commented, “Features such as 4K and HDR have raised consumer expectations for video quality. Our collaboration with Advanced HDR by Technicolor and other partners is a strategic move to support the growing availability of NextGen TV content in HDR, ensuring consumers can access this content through HDR-enabled, ATSC 3.0-ready receivers.”

The new HDR capability is expected to be available in quad tuner devices by the end of March, with dual tuner models receiving a free update at the same time, according to BitRouter. Meanwhile, Zinwell is working with Philips, a developer of Advanced HDR by Technicolor, to integrate the solution into Zinwell’s conversion box, which is powered by an Amlogic system-on-chip. Optimization and testing are underway to ensure compatibility with broadcaster workflows and a range of display devices. Zinwell’s boxes are expected to be available for purchase in the U.S. soon.

Paul Wu, vice president of sales division III at Zinwell, stated, “Consumers are demanding higher picture quality across all platforms, and broadcasters are moving toward advanced video formats with the rollout of ATSC 3.0. HDR is now essential for delivering a premium viewing experience. Integrating Advanced HDR by Technicolor allows Zinwell to meet these evolving expectations.”

Rick Dumont, head of business development for Advanced HDR by Technicolor, added, “Zinwell’s integration of Advanced HDR is significant as ATSC 3.0 adoption grows. HDR-enabled conversion boxes, like Zinwell’s, enable consumers with non-ATSC 3.0 TVs to enjoy high-quality HDR broadcasts. As the industry transitions to ATSC 3.0, HDR capabilities are expanding.”

Matthew Goldman, vice president of strategic and technical initiatives at Sinclair, Inc., which uses Advanced HDR by Technicolor on over 100 ATSC 3.0 channels and digital platforms, noted, “HDR brings a notable improvement to television picture quality. Sinclair has deployed more HDR channels than any other broadcaster. The partnership between Zinwell and Advanced HDR by Technicolor is a key step in building an ecosystem where consumers can enjoy NextGen TV content in HDR.”
