MFF & Co, an international entertainment studio based in Los Angeles, and Brazilian television powerhouse Globo have brought on U.S. writers Alexander Maggio, Jenny Lynn, and Ted Sullivan to adapt three of Globo’s most successful telenovelas for North American audiences.
This collaboration, announced as part of their joint venture in August, will see the writers reimagining the original telenovelas in English and developing them into multi-season series formats familiar to U.S. viewers. The news will be highlighted at a Globo showcase during Content Americas.
The selected writers bring extensive experience from high-profile American television:
- Alexander Maggio (“Homeland: Aftermath,” “Madam Secretary,” “FBI”) will adapt “Empire” (2014-15), the International Emmy-winning drama about a power-driven millionaire fighting to maintain control of his jewelry empire.
- Jenny Lynn (“Mayans M.C.,” “Marvel’s Iron Fist,” “Arrow”) will reimagine “The Other Side of Paradise” (“O Outro Lado do Paraíso,” 2017-18), a global hit licensed in 85 countries, centered on a woman seeking revenge after being institutionalized by her mother-in-law.
- Ted Sullivan (“Riverdale,” “Star Trek: Discovery,” “Pure Genius,” “Supergirl”) will adapt “King of Cattle” (1996-97), an epic love story set during World War II and later in 1996, chronicling a decades-long feud between two rival immigrant families.
Estela Renner, showrunner, director, co-founder, and Chief Creative Officer of MFF & Co, commented, “This marks a pivotal moment for our projects and partnership with Globo. These accomplished writers are fully equipped to transform these audience-proven Brazilian stories into series that truly resonate with global audiences.”
Angela Colla, Globo’s Head of International Business and Coproductions, added, “This next phase of our partnership with MFF & Co represents an important evolution in how we bring Globo’s stories to the world. Having such accomplished writers attached to these projects reinforces the strength, relevance, and adaptability of our content. These are stories that have already proven their emotional power with millions of viewers, and we are confident they can resonate just as deeply when reimagined for new audiences.”
Miura Kite, president of global content at MFF & Co, noted, “The attachment of these talented writers puts tested creative muscle behind the ambition of this slate. Each of them brings a distinctive auteurist voice and deep experience to this high-impact serialized storytelling.”
Other notable titles in development include “Belíssima” (2005-06), a major Globo hit from Silvio Abreu with a 48% audience share, and “All the Flowers,” created by João Emanuel Carneiro, who also created Globo’s modern classic “Brazil Avenue.” The development of each adaptation will be overseen by Miura Kite, formerly EVP of global television at Participant.
