Billboard has named Leila Cobo and Jason Lipshutz as co-Chief Content Officers, effective immediately. The leadership change follows the departure of outgoing editor-in-chief Hannah Karp, who will join Warner Music Group as Executive Vice President and Chief Communications Officer on January 26.
This transition comes shortly after several long-time Billboard staff members, including Robert Levine, Steve Knopper, Dave Brooks, Glenn Peoples, and Frank DiGiacomo, were laid off last month.
In their new roles, Cobo and Lipshutz will oversee editorial strategy and content across Billboard’s portfolio, including established brands such as Women in Music, Latin Music Week, and The Stage at SXSW.
Jay Penske, Chairman and CEO of Penske Media Corporation, praised the appointments, stating, “Leila is one of the most respected voices and leaders in Latin American music, having brought significant attention to the genre and built globally recognized franchises. Jason is a trusted authority in modern pop music, known for his passion and creativity. I look forward to seeing Leila and Jason guide Billboard’s editorial direction into the future.”
Cobo previously served as Chief Content Officer of Billboard Latin and will now also oversee country music. Lipshutz, formerly Executive Director of Music, will be responsible for pop, rock, hip-hop, and dance coverage. Both will report directly to Billboard CEO Mike Van.
Mike Van commented, “We are excited to recognize such outstanding leaders within our organization. Leila’s commitment to excellence and her impact on the music industry are unmatched. Jason has grown into a respected leader, and together they bring expertise, vision, and business acumen to these roles, positioning Billboard for a dynamic future.”
Cobo expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “It’s an honor to guide the content of Billboard, the world’s leading music media brand, and to work alongside Jason, whose musical knowledge is exceptional. I am grateful for the trust placed in me and look forward to elevating diverse voices and expanding Billboard’s storytelling.”
Lipshutz added, “I’m excited to lead our talented team with Leila and appreciate the opportunity from our leadership. Having worked at every level of Billboard’s editorial team, I understand the brand’s core and see great potential for what we can achieve together.”
