At IBC2025, Shotoku Broadcast Systems is set to unveil its groundbreaking Swoop robotic cranes, designed to enhance studio operations. These innovative cranes promise to replace traditional systems, offering greater flexibility and safety for broadcasters.

AMSTERDAM — Shotoku Broadcast Systems, a leading developer in robotic systems, is set to elevate studio robotics at IBC2025 with the introduction of its new line of Swoop robotic cranes. These advanced cranes are designed to replace traditional manually operated cranes and jibs, which typically require one or two dedicated operators and lack the integration needed for robotic camera systems.

The Swoop cranes will be showcased at Shotoku’s stand 12.F47 during the event. James Eddershaw, managing director at Shotoku, expressed enthusiasm about the launch, stating, “We are so excited to be introducing Swoop to the world at IBC. Swoop represents a major step forward in studio robotics, combining creativity, control, and safety in one elegantly engineered system. The crane enables broadcasters to reach new heights and, dare I say it, new lows by expanding creative possibilities while enhancing operational flexibility.”

The Swoop range launches with two models: Swoop 140 and Swoop 220, featuring boom arm reaches of 140 cm (4’7”) and 220 cm (7’3”), respectively. Both models blend precision engineering with Shotoku’s renowned reliability, allowing production directors to create and replicate sweeping shots with confidence and ease.

Additionally, Swoop offers two base options to cater to various production needs and budgets:

  • SmartPed robotic base (Swoop SP): Provides complete freedom of movement across the studio floor with remotely controlled X/Y positioning.
  • Manual base: A cost-effective solution for scenarios where manual relocation of the base between shots or shows is sufficient.

Swoop integrates seamlessly with Shotoku’s TR-XT advanced control system, allowing for comprehensive control of the crane within the studio. The TR-XT’s StudioView display shows Swoop’s location in relation to other cameras, while the SoftRail system enables the Swoop SP to be guided along precisely defined paths, ensuring safe and consistent movement across the studio floor.

The Swoop system utilizes a specially configured version of Shotoku’s TG-47 robotic pan/tilt head, mounted at the end of the crane’s arm. This setup allows operators to frame the perfect shot while the crane delivers dramatic new camera angles and transitions, surpassing the capabilities of even the most advanced robotic pedestals.

Prioritizing safety, Shotoku has designed the Swoop systems with multiple intelligent proximity detectors along the arm and above and below the payload. This creates a dynamic protective “bubble” that detects obstacles, halts all movement, and prevents collisions. A single button allows for a seamless switch to Local mode for repositioning when necessary, and a safety locking bar is available in Local mode to secure the arm in place.
