Sony Pictures Classics has rescheduled the wide North American theatrical release of Mamoru Hosoda’s latest feature, Scarlet, to early 2026, although a specific date has yet to be confirmed. Originally set for a December 12 launch this year, the film will now instead receive a limited awards-qualifying run in 2025.

This strategic decision aligns with the film’s strong push for recognition in the upcoming awards season, potentially enhancing its box office performance. Scarlet is set to world premiere out of competition at the Venice International Film Festival on September 4, followed by screenings at both the Toronto International Film Festival and New York Film Festival.

The narrative follows a medieval princess on a quest for vengeance after her father’s murder. Injured and caught between life and death in an Otherworld, she meets a contemporary young man who inspires her to envision a future devoid of revenge. When she confronts her father’s killer once more, Scarlet must choose whether to perpetuate the cycle of hatred or to embark on a new path.

Hosoda, a co-founder of Studio Chizu alongside producer Yuichiro Saito, remarked that the film reflects a pressing global need for compassion:

“As we witness heartbreaking conflicts around the world, I believe that finding love and choosing to live together in unity is what will lead us towards something better. That’s why I want to share this new film with the world — now more than ever.”

The film is produced by Saito and Nozomu Takahashi for Studio Chizu, in collaboration with Toshimi Tanio for Nippon TV, with financing from Sony Pictures.

Sony Pictures Classics has lauded the project as “a masterful work from a world-class filmmaker,” positioning Scarlet as one of the most anticipated animated releases approaching 2026.
