GKIDS and HBO Max Partner to Bring 20 New Films to Streaming Service

HBO Max and GKIDS, a leading distributor of Japanese animation, have announced an expanded, multi-year licensing agreement. This deal solidifies HBO Max as the U.S. streaming home for a broader slate of acclaimed animated and live-action Japanese films, building upon their existing partnership for the Studio Ghibli catalog. The agreement will bring 20 new titles to the service.

Content and Availability

The new deal includes titles from renowned filmmakers such as Makoto Shinkai, Mamoru Hosoda, Hideaki Anno, and Satoshi Kon. The first wave of films will be available to stream starting September 1, 2025, with many titles making their North American streaming or 4K streaming debuts. The remaining titles will be rolled out throughout late 2025 and into 2026.

Leadership Commentary

Royce Battleman, EVP, Global Content Acquisitions at Warner Bros. Discovery, commented on the deal, stating, “HBO Max’s continued partnership with GKIDS indicates our commitment to bringing world-class Japanese animation and original films to our audiences. This deal, which introduces masterpieces and fan favorites to streaming for the very first time, allows us to continue delivering premium films to our subscribers and solidifies HBO Max’s position as a leading destination in the space.”

Dave Jesteadt, GKIDS’ President, added, “We are excited to continue the relationship with HBO Max and to bring this exciting package to US streaming audiences. HBO Max’s focus on award-winning, genre-defining essential programming is a perfect match for the type of outstanding filmmaking that GKIDS champions.”
