Roblox Launches New IP Licensing Platform for Creators and Rights Holders

New Roblox Platform Streamlines Intellectual Property Licensing

Roblox has officially launched a new licensing platform designed to facilitate collaborations between intellectual property (IP) rights holders and platform creators. This initiative, which includes the Roblox License Manager and Licenses catalog, aims to enable the development of digital experiences featuring popular creative works, connecting rights holders with Roblox’s extensive user base.

Platform Overview

The new platform simplifies the previously complex and time-consuming process of IP licensing. It offers self-serve tools for rights holders to register IP, create licenses, customize terms, monitor usage, and manage revenue sharing. Concurrently, creators can browse the Licenses catalog, apply for licenses, and receive approval or denial, significantly reducing the negotiation period from months to days or hours.

Strategic Objectives and Creator Impact

This development aligns with Roblox’s stated goal to have 10% of global gaming content revenue flow through its ecosystem. The company reported that creators earned $923 million in 2024, projected to exceed $1 billion this year. By streamlining IP integration, Roblox seeks to empower a broader range of creators to incorporate licensed content into their experiences across various categories, including gaming and entertainment.

Initial IP Partnerships

The platform is launching with collaborations featuring prominent IP from leading companies. Currently, seven IPs are available for licensed use by eligible creators, with additional IPs anticipated in the coming weeks and months. Initial partners include:

  • Lionsgate: Offering franchises such as “Twilight,” “Saw,” “Now You See Me,” and “Divergent” for digital experience development.
  • Netflix: Extending popular series like “Squid Game” and “Stranger Things” to the Roblox platform.
  • Sega: Providing “Like A Dragon” (Yakuza) as licensed IP, allowing creators to build worlds based on its narrative and setting.
  • Kodansha: A Japanese publisher, bringing “Blue Lock” and “That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime” to the Licenses catalog.

Future Expansion

Roblox plans to onboard additional IP holders throughout the year and aims to make the License Manager accessible to all IP holders in the coming months. While initial agreements focus on full-experience adaptations, the company is exploring other license types to further integrate IP for a wider array of creators.
