Universal Pictures Adjusts Film Release Schedule

Universal Pictures has made significant changes to its upcoming film lineup, rescheduling DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek 5 from July 1, 2026, to December 23, 2026. In the meantime, Illumination’s Minions 3 will now occupy the earlier date, moving up a full year from its original release date of June 30, 2027. Additionally, an “Untitled Illumination Event Film” will shift from March 19, 2027, to the June 30, 2027, slot.

Veteran animator and long-time collaborator with DreamWorks Animation, Conrad Vernon (known for Shrek 2 and The Addams Family animated franchise), will direct Shrek 5 alongside Walt Dohrn (who worked on Trolls Band Together and Trolls World Tour). The original cast members, including Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz, will reprise their iconic roles as Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona.

Minions 3 Direction and Production

 

Minions 3 will be helmed by Pierre Coffin, who directed the first three Despicable Me films and Minions, with a screenplay by Brian Lynch (known for Minions and The Secret Life of Pets films). Coffin has been the voice of the Minions since their debut in 2010.

Production Leadership

 

Chris Meledandri, CEO of Illumination (responsible for the Despicable Me and Minions franchises, as well as the Secret Life of Pets films), will produce both films. He will collaborate with Gina Shay (associated with the Trolls franchise and Shrek Forever After) for Shrek 5 and Bill Ryan (from The Super Mario Bros. Movie) for Minions 3.
