African animation studio Triggerfish has partnered with UNESCO to introduce The Creator Labs, an initiative aimed at promoting women in the African animation industry.

The African film and audiovisual sectors contribute around USD $5 billion to the continent’s GDP and employ over 5 million people. Despite this, UNESCO has highlighted the underrepresentation of women of color in leadership positions within the industry.

UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Culture, Ernesto Ottone R, stated, “The new partnership with Triggerfish Foundation aims to address the education and training gap in the African film sector, particularly affecting women. By offering technical and vocational education in animation production, we hope to enhance career opportunities for women in TV and filmmaking.”

Carina Lücke, Director of the Triggerfish Foundation, emphasized the necessity of empowering African women in animation. Through collaboration with UNESCO, the goal is to promote gender equality in the industry by prioritizing leadership roles, fostering creativity, and promoting diversity.

The Creator Labs are open to talent from across Africa, offering a Director Lab for aspiring directors and an Animation Art Lab for artists. Participants will benefit from masterclass sessions, mentorship opportunities, and networking events to advance their careers in animation.

Training materials developed through the labs will be freely accessible online via the Triggerfish Academy, ensuring aspiring African creatives can benefit from these resources.

The Labs have received guidance from award-winning directors and art directors, including Ng’endo Mukii, Tshepo Moche, Caroline Vos, Cinzia Angelini, Nadia Darries, and other pioneering African creators.

Applications for The Creator Labs are currently open until January 5, 2025. Online masterclasses and mentoring sessions are scheduled to take place from March to May 2025. Interested individuals can submit applications and find more information here.
