SailGP’s F50 boats are now equipped with UAE-engineered T-Foil Wings, crafted by Strata Manufacturing.

Strata Manufacturing PJSC (‘Strata’), a subsidiary of the Mubadala Investment Company and a frontrunner in advanced manufacturing within the UAE, has successfully delivered the initial batch of 24 innovative titanium T-foils for SailGP’s high-speed F50 catamarans.

This achievement marks a significant milestone following last year’s partnership with SailGP, a premier global racing championship recognized as one of the fastest-growing sports and entertainment properties worldwide. Under this collaboration, Strata is set to provide specialized component packages, including the newly designed T-Foils (titanium foil wings) and T-Rudders, specifically engineered to enhance the performance of SailGP’s F50 fleet. Each package consists of 24 units, designed to equip 12 boats, meeting the high-speed demands of elite competitive sailing.

Strata has been tasked with the production of these titanium and carbon fiber foil wings, engineered with a cutting-edge configuration to maximize hydro-aerodynamic efficiency. This project not only showcases Strata’s operational excellence but also highlights its adaptability, marking the company’s expansion into non-aerospace manufacturing.

Homaid Al Shimmari, Deputy Group CEO and Chief Corporate & Human Capital Officer at Mubadala, remarked: “This milestone is a testament to our successful partnership with SailGP in fostering innovation and showcasing the UAE’s advanced manufacturing prowess on a global platform. Through Strata’s contributions, we are not only enhancing the sport’s performance but also reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s leadership in sustainability, technological excellence, and meaningful cross-industry collaborations.”

“I felt immense pride witnessing the new T-foils in action during the recent Auckland race. This was their debut in a competitive setting. Observing the New Zealand team achieving speeds of 97.2 km/h during practice, and our Mubadala Brazil SailGP team reaching 87.69 km/h on the first day of racing was truly remarkable.”

Ismail Ali Abdulla, Executive Director of the UAE Clusters unit within Mubadala’s UAE Investments platform and Managing Director of Strata, stated: “We take great pride in Strata’s accomplishments and the expertise demonstrated in these prestigious partnerships. Just as Strata has excelled with Airbus, Boeing, and Pilatus, we are now charting new waters with SailGP, showcasing our capabilities in advanced manufacturing.” Abdulla emphasized that this milestone strengthens the ongoing partnership between Mubadala and SailGP, with Mubadala serving as a global partner for this exceptional league.

Russell Coutts, SailGP CEO, commented: “The launch and integration of the new T-Foils have exceeded our expectations – debuting with two days of elite racing in front of over 25,000 fans in Auckland, New Zealand. Teams are continuing to refine their skills at upcoming events in Sydney, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. It’s evident that some teams are adapting more swiftly than others, discovering innovative ways to leverage this exciting advancement to elevate competition and tactical racing across the fleet. This marks the beginning of a continuous collaboration with Strata to further enhance our racing experience.”

Since its establishment in 2010, Strata has emerged as a significant player in advanced manufacturing, producing airframe components for some of the world’s leading aerospace firms. The partnership with SailGP continues this legacy of innovation, reinforcing Strata’s ability to meet the stringent demands of global industries. SailGP maintains a long-standing global partnership with Mubadala Investment Company, extending both on and off the water – from its production collaboration with Strata Manufacturing to promoting environmental stewardship within the sport through youth and community outreach.

SailGP’s F50 catamarans, utilized by the league’s twelve competitive teams, are identical, state-of-the-art vessels renowned for their speed and innovation. The F50 represents the culmination of over a decade of development in high-performance sailing, capable of exceeding speeds of 100 km/h (54 knots). SailGP has long aspired to introduce T-Foils, specifically designed to enhance performance, control, and safety of the F50s at high speeds. These new foils are also less susceptible to damage when subjected to high negative loads during a nose-dive, a challenge faced by the original foils.

SailGP has confirmed that the new high-speed T-Foils will be integrated into its entire international fleet of F50s by January 2025, ahead of the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix | Auckland. They will replace the existing L-Foils that have been in use since SailGP’s inception in 2019.

The Rolex SailGP 2025 Championship season commenced in Dubai last December 2024, with New Zealand claiming victory in the opening event. Racing around the globe, SailGP’s 2025 Season will be the league’s most extensive to date, featuring events across five continents, with the UAE concluding the season by hosting the Grand Final in Abu Dhabi in November 2025, with Mubadala as the Title Partner for the event.
