Iraqi director Hasan Hadi has been honored with the People’s Choice audience award at the second edition of the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight for his debut feature, The President’s Cake. This award, being the only audience-voted prize within the Cannes Official Selection and its parallel sections, signifies a monumental recognition for Hadi and a pivotal moment for Iraqi cinema.

Drawing from Personal Experience

Based in New York, Hadi reflects on his childhood experiences growing up in southern Iraq during the 1990s, under Saddam Hussein’s regime and the severe conditions of international sanctions. His film narrates the journey of Lamia, a nine-year-old girl who must bring a birthday cake to school to celebrate the president’s birthday. What seems like a simple task transforms into a harrowing struggle for survival amidst extreme scarcity, with potentially devastating consequences for her and her family.

Produced by Leah Chen Baker under the New York-based TPC Film LLC, The President’s Cake is being marketed internationally by Films Boutique, while UTA is managing its distribution in North America.

Understanding the Directors’ Fortnight

The Directors’ Fortnight, a distinguished section of the Cannes Film Festival, is celebrated for its commitment to bold and independent filmmaking. Unlike traditional jury systems, the People’s Choice award, which includes a €7,500 ($8,400) cash prize, is determined solely by audience votes.
