Sesame Workshop Appoints Joseph Giraldi as COO

Sesame Workshop, the non-profit organization behind Sesame Street, has appointed seasoned digital media executive Joseph Giraldi as its new Chief Operating Officer.

Reporting to the newly appointed CEO Sherrie Westin, Giraldi, who was previously a co-founder of the consulting firm CJBK Media Group, will prioritize securing a new platform for new episodes of Sesame Street following Warner Bros. Discovery’s decision not to renew its output agreement with HBO and Max.

Significant format changes are planned for the beloved children’s series, with Season 56 set to launch in fall 2025. The show will transition from its traditional magazine-style format to two extended, narrative-focused segments, along with a new animated feature titled Tales From 123.

Giraldi brings extensive experience in fostering business growth within the digital media landscape, having held executive positions at Imax, Time Inc., and IBM. He also spent 12 years at Paramount, where he served as Executive Vice President of Marketing, Digital Media & Strategy for the Smithsonian Channel until 2021, and previously worked as Director of Digital Distribution & Strategic Partnerships at HBO.

“For over 55 years, Sesame Workshop has harnessed the power of media to deliver quality early education to children worldwide. In this rapidly evolving media landscape, Joseph’s extensive knowledge in digital strategy and business development will be invaluable,” stated CEO Westin in a press release on Monday.

Giraldi emphasized the necessity for Sesame Workshop to adapt to unprecedented changes in the media industry. “Five decades ago, it utilized the cutting-edge medium of television to revolutionize children’s learning and preparation for success. Today, the Workshop continues its innovative legacy at a crucial time when its mission is more vital than ever. I am eager to collaborate with the team to uphold this remarkable legacy,” he remarked in his own statement.

Additionally, Giraldi serves as an adjunct professor in the Entertainment, Media, and Technology Program at NYU Stern School of Business.
