Scanline VFX Showcases Visual Effects for Netflix’s Senna
Scanline VFX has released a visual effects breakdown reel in collaboration with AWN and VFXWorld, showcasing its contributions to Netflix’s limited series, Senna. Directed by Vicente Amorim and Júlia Rezende and produced by Gullane, the series chronicles the life of the legendary Brazilian Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna.
In a significant milestone, Scanline took on the role of complete visual effects project management and consultation, alongside creating several hundred shots as a key creative collaborator on the series.
Under the leadership of VFX Supervisor Craig Wentworth and VFX Producer Vero Lauzon, Scanline’s team effectively managed nearly 2,100 shots across six episodes, collaborating with six international vendors, including its own facilities in Vancouver and Seoul.
With a strong reputation in digital world-building, virtual production, and high-end visual effects for major films and TV shows, Scanline was ideally positioned to tackle this complex and regionally significant project.
“We encountered a range of VFX challenges, from basic burn-ins to intricate full CG environments and racing sequences, all while working within a relatively modest budget for a project of this scale and ambition,” Wentworth stated. “Our main objective was to provide our Brazilian partners with maximum value, leveraging our extensive experience in similar projects to deliver high-quality results at a fraction of the typical cost.”
Key Responsibilities and Achievements
Beyond overall project management, Scanline was responsible for recreating historic racetrack environments and F1 cars from the late 80s and early 90s, accurately depicting several pivotal moments in Senna’s career. Plate photography was captured at various racetracks in Argentina and Uruguay, which Scanline transformed into iconic locations such as Suzuka (Japan), Estoril (Portugal) in rainy conditions, Interlagos (Brazil), and Imola (Italy). Extensive CG builds and animated crowds were required for Suzuka—featured in three different time periods—and Interlagos, along with era-specific set dressing and advertising based on original FIA footage.
Scanline meticulously crafted hero cars for both Senna and his rival Alain Prost, as well as additional vehicles across multiple races, incorporating dynamic effects like dirt, smoke, flames, rain, and splashes to enhance the authenticity of the production footage.
In total, Scanline’s teams in Vancouver and Seoul delivered 372 racing and environment shots that captured some of the most iconic moments from Senna’s career with “stunning accuracy.” “The meticulous attention to detail was crucial for our work, which needed to seamlessly integrate with archival footage of the actual events,” Wentworth emphasized. “There was no room for error, and I am incredibly thankful to the Scanline team for their dedication to both the intricate details and the more challenging aspects of the project!”
