Suriya’s ‘Retro’ Continues to Impress at the Box Office

Suriya’s eagerly awaited collaboration with director Karthik Subbaraj, ‘Retro’, is demonstrating impressive box office performance, amassing over Rs 46.50 crore in net collections across India within just five days of its release, despite receiving a mix of reviews, as per early estimates from Sacnilk.

Tamil Version Shines

On its fifth day (Monday, May 5, 2025), Retro generated around Rs 3.35 crore across all languages. While this marks a notable decline from its opening day figures, it aligns with typical weekday trends. The film debuted strongly on Day 1 with Rs 19.25 crore, largely driven by the Tamil version, which contributed Rs 17.25 crore. The film maintained solid numbers over the weekend, earning Rs 7.75 crore on Friday, Rs 8 crore on Saturday, and Rs 8.15 crore on Sunday.

Decent Occupancy Rates

The overall occupancy rate for the Tamil version on Monday was 22.54%, with night shows attracting the highest attendance at 26.95%. In contrast, the Telugu version saw a lower occupancy of 13.36%, indicating moderate interest in the Andhra-Telangana region. Despite these fluctuations, the film’s star power and stylish presentation continue to draw audiences.

Mixed Reviews Pour In

Featuring a talented ensemble cast that includes Pooja Hegde, Joju George, Jayaram, Nassar, and Prakash Raj, Retro combines elements of action, nostalgia, and socio-political themes in Karthik Subbaraj’s distinctive style. While reviews have been mixed, with commendations for Suriya’s performance and the film’s visuals, critiques have been directed at its screenplay and pacing. One review noted, “There are moments in the second half where some ambitious writing choices—like the climax, reminiscent of the filmmaker’s Jigarthanda Double X—result in unintended reactions. Additionally, the violence occasionally feels excessive, and Rukmini’s pacifism could benefit from a more compelling rationale for her repeated breakups with Paari, especially when he resorts to violence to protect her or others.”
