New Adaptation of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Announced
Matthew Warchus is set to direct a fresh version of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, with a screenplay penned by Edna Walsh, as announced by EON Productions and Amazon MGM on Thursday.
Warchus is renowned for his work on Matilda the Musical (2022) and Pride (2014), while Walsh is recognized for her upcoming project, Small Things Like These (2024).
The original story, created by Ian Fleming as a bedtime tale for his son Casper, was transformed into a screenplay by Roald Dahl and Ken Hughes, alongside Richard Maibaum, in 1968. The film, which has become a cherished classic, featured Dick Van Dyke and was directed by Hughes. The iconic song, composed by the Sherman Brothers, received an Academy Award nomination.
According to EON and Amazon, the new film is currently in the early stages of development. In the original movie, Van Dyke portrayed the widowed inventor Caractacus Potts, along with his children Jeremy (Adrian Hall) and Jemima (Heather Ripley). They teamed up with Truly Scrumptious (Sally Ann Howes), the heiress to the Scrumptious candy empire, to restore an old racing car with magical flying capabilities. The film was produced by Cubby Broccoli, with production design by Ken Adam.
Additionally, the story was adapted for Broadway in 2005, featuring Raúl Esparza in the role of Potts.
