Hungary Extends Film Tax Incentive

Hungary has renewed its 30% tax incentive for film and series productions for an additional six years, now extending the program until 2030. The announcement was made by Hungarian film commissioner Csaba Kael during the inaugural Made in Hungary event in Los Angeles.

In recent years, Hungary has gained popularity as a filming location for Hollywood due to its generous incentive program and skilled production teams. The incentive provides a 30% rebate on expenditures incurred during production in Hungary, functioning as part of the country’s film support initiative. This financial support is issued as a cash refund after financing.

Recent Productions in Hungary

Notable international films shot in Hungary include Alien: Romulus, The Brutalist, Dune: Prophecy, NBC’s The Day of the Jackal, Maria by Pablo Larrain, FBI: International, NCIS, and the Now You See Me series.

Kael expressed excitement about the thriving film industry, stating, “It’s incredible that approximately 100 international motion pictures are made with us each year, from major Hollywood features to indie films and innovative commercials.” He emphasized the importance of continuing collaborations with international partners to enhance the Hungarian film industry.

The film incentive, which started in 2004, was one of the first in Central Europe and was initially set to conclude at the end of 2024. According to the Hungarian Film Commission, the country’s annual film production expenditure has reached $910 million.
