The Project
Hook:
In Meghalaya, a serpent curse can end a marriage, a decades-old conflict can still divide a village, and a widower can wait thirty years for a face that won’t quite return to him in dreams. These are stories one entire region has been telling itself for generations – and until now, none of them have reached a screen outside it.
Concept:
The catalog runs through Northeast Indian folk horror, revenge thriller, and human drama, all drawn from Khasi, Garo, and Jaintia oral tradition rather than the genre’s usual reference points. It sits closest to the commercial instinct behind Kantara and Stree – regional folklore turned mainstream event – but works from mythology no Indian or international platform has drawn on before. That combination of untapped source material and proven genre appetite is what makes this catalog worth backing now.
Format:
Feature Film Catalog · Short Film Catalog · Documentary & Cultural Programming
Slate release across genres; not tied to a single franchise.
Comparables:
✓ Kantara (2022) – ₹16 cr → ₹400-450 cr worldwide – ~25x return
✓ Stree (2018) – ₹23-25 cr → ₹180.76 cr worldwide – ~7x return
✓ Tumbbad (2018) – Cult 2024 re-release – 180%+ ROI
What’s Ready
Rights & Materials:
✓ Worldwide rights available across the slate
✓ Screeners and viewing links available for lead titles
✓ Delivery materials prepared, cleared for AVOD and FAST distribution
✓ Existing catalog: 85 feature films, 210 short films, plus music and cultural programming
✓ Multilingual and subtitle support for regional-language content
✓ Government of Meghalaya backing and rights clearance
✓ NDA / full materials available on request
The Team:
Nick Kharkongor – Head of International Distribution, PMU Meghalaya – leads worldwide licensing outreach on behalf of the government-backed platform.
The Opportunity
The Ask:
Distribution / licensing partner for worldwide rights, open to both exclusive and non-exclusive terms depending on platform and territory. Open to:
✓OTT licensing (SVOD/AVOD)
✓AVOD and FAST channel programming
✓Curated horror and thriller genre collections
✓International genre library acquisition
✓Full-catalog licensing across features, shorts, and cultural programming
Why Now:
Regional-language content is now the fastest-growing category on Indian streaming, and Northeast Indian stories remain almost entirely absent from it. The catalog has already logged 26.5M+ views on a single-region platform with no mainstream distribution partner in place – real demand ahead of any international push.
De-Risked From Day One:
✓ Government of Meghalaya backing – state-level rights clearance and ongoing platform funding since July 2024 launch
✓ Built-in audience validation – 4,65,000+ registered users and 1hr 30min average watch time, established before any international release
✓ Ready-cleared rights – worldwide licensing available now, both exclusive and non-exclusive terms open
✓ Deep bench beyond flagship titles – 85 features and 210 shorts reduce reliance on any single title’s performance
Most Interesting Project For
Genre-focused OTT platforms – You’re building out a horror/thriller vertical and want festival-recognized titles that haven’t been licensed anywhere else yet.
AVOD and FAST channel operators – You need a deep, ready-cleared catalog to fill a genre or international channel without waiting on production.
Sales agents and aggregators in South Asian content – You represent buyers looking for the next Kantara-style regional breakout before the rest of the market catches on.
