Greenwich Entertainment has acquired the North American rights to Went Up The Hill, a psychological drama and ghost story directed by New Zealand filmmaker Samuel Van Grinsven (known for Sequin in a Blue Room), featuring Dacre Montgomery from Stranger Things and Vicky Krieps (from Phantom Thread and Old).
Montgomery portrays Jack, a man who was left behind as a child. He travels to the secluded areas of New Zealand to attend the funeral of his estranged mother, Elizabeth. There, he encounters her widow, Jill (played by Krieps), with whom Elizabeth had a turbulent relationship. Over several nights, Elizabeth’s ghost returns to inhabit both Jack and Jill, using their bodies to communicate with one another. Trapped in a perilous nocturnal struggle, Jack and Jill must find a way to break free from Elizabeth’s grip before she drives them to their limits.
Went Up the Hill had its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, where it impressed Caryn James, a critic from the Hollywood Reporter. In her review, she described Van Grinsven’s film as “elliptical, poetic, technically stunning,” noting that it is a ghost story that only subtly references horror elements. The film effectively utilizes the ghost to delve into themes of grief, abandonment, and the emotional turmoil caused by the deceased even during her lifetime.
“After our beautiful launch in Toronto, I am thrilled that Greenwich will now bring Went Up The Hill to theaters,” the director stated. “I eagerly anticipate U.S. audiences experiencing the haunting performances of both Vicky and Dacre in these truly distinctive roles.”
Greenwich plans to release the film in theaters nationwide this summer.
Went Up the Hill was produced by Vicky Pope, Samantha Jennings, and Kristina Ceyton, with production companies POP Film and Causeway Films.
Andy Bohn from Greenwich negotiated the acquisition with CAA Media Finance and Bankside Films on behalf of the filmmakers.
