Embracing Vintage Fashion at the 2025 Golden Globes

Why invest in a brand-new gown when you can opt for a design from the illustrious era of Paris haute couture? This mindset may have influenced a trio of prominent actresses in their red-carpet selections for the 2025 Golden Globes. The resurgence of archival fashion, which also aligns with sustainability trends, has emerged as a significant style theme of the evening.

Ariana Grande, the star of Wicked, donned a gown she discovered at Lily et Cie in Beverly Hills, a boutique renowned for its archive fashion. Her pale yellow silk gown, featuring a hand-beaded bodice, hails from Hubert de Givenchy’s Spring/Summer 1966 collection, a period marked by the couturier’s close friendship with Audrey Hepburn.

“This fashion didn’t come about by coincidence; it stems from one of the most iconic collaborations in fashion and film history,” states Rita Watnick, owner of Lily et Cie. “The dress was unworn and still bore the original mode depose seal. It was acquired from the wife of a prominent old-school studio head, from whom I purchased remarkable museum-quality pieces.”

Watnick further remarks that despite the gown’s nearly 60-year age, it appears perfectly suited for Grande. “The fusion of young Hollywood with Givenchy, the master of sophisticated chic, is both logical and timeless, if not futuristic,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Givenchy embraced youth culture, and I’m sure he would appreciate this look on Ariana.”

Elle Fanning also made a statement in a custom ballgown inspired by a Pierre Balmain haute-couture design from the Fall/Winter 1953 collection, originally referred to as a “reversed Champagne flute.” Fanning’s belted gown features draped satin and a beaded animal-print molded bustier, while the original was crafted from tulle and fur. The beaded animal print is also present in the house’s Pre-Fall 2025 collection.

Anya Taylor-Joy, another standout of the evening, wore a piece from the Dior archives. Taylor-Joy has served as a global ambassador for Dior since 2021, further solidifying the connection between vintage fashion and contemporary celebrity influence.
