The European Film Awards to be Held in Athens in 2027

The European Film Awards (EFA) will take place in Athens, the city of EFA-winning director Yorgos Lanthimos, for its 2027 ceremony.

The European Film Academy, in collaboration with the Hellenic Film and Audiovisual Centre, announced this decision on Wednesday. The 39th EFA gala is set to occur at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) in the Greek capital.

The prestigious film awards rotate annually between Berlin and various European cultural capitals. This marks the first occasion that the EFAs will be hosted in southeastern Europe. The 39th EFAs are scheduled for January 16, 2027, at the architect Renzo Piano-designed SNFCC.

Greek Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni expressed, “Athens welcomes one of the most iconic events in European cinema, having the honor of hosting, for the first time, the 39th European Film Awards ceremony.”

Leading up to the awards, there will be a year-long initiative promoting Greek and European cinema, with specifics to be revealed in early 2026. The choice of Athens is intended to highlight Greece’s burgeoning film industry and its attractive cash rebate scheme. The Greek tax credit offers a rebate of up to 40% for qualifying productions, making it one of the most appealing incentives in Europe.

Notable films such as Angelina Jolie’s award-season contender “Maria,” which features her as the iconic Greek opera singer Maria Callas, filmed scenes at the Apollon Public Theatre in Pyrgos. Additionally, Ruben Östlund shot the final act of his Oscar-nominated “Triangle of Sadness” on the island of Evia, while David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future” was filmed entirely in Greece.

Leonidas Christopoulos, CEO of the Hellenic Film and Audiovisual Center, remarked, “The selection of Athens highlights the city’s long and rich cultural heritage and also reflects Greece’s growing dynamism and influence in the European film and audiovisual industry.”

Yorgos Lanthimos, director of acclaimed films like “Poor Things,” “The Favourite,” and “The Lobster,” is the most prominent of the 158 Greek EFA members. His works have garnered 10 EFA nominations and 4 wins, including Best Picture for “The Favourite” in 2019. His long-time collaborator, Yorgos Mavropsaridis, also won the EFA for Best Editing that year. Furthermore, co-writer Efthimis Filippou shared the Best Screenwriter award with Lanthimos in 2015.

The late legendary Greek director Theo Angelopoulos, known for “Ulysses’ Gaze” and “Eternity and a Day,” won 3 European Film Awards during his career, including Best Picture for “Landscape in the Mist” in 1989. Greek producers Konstantinos Kontovrakis and Giorgos Karnavas received the Eurimages International Co-Production Award in 2018.

Starting next year, the European Film Academy will shift its gala from December to mid-January to better align the EFAs with the awards season. The 2026 European Film Awards will take place in Berlin.
