Elizabeth Olsen: Returning to Marvel is a Choice That Supports Indie Projects

Elizabeth Olsen’s portrayal of the Scarlet Witch in the MCU has opened up new career avenues for her.

At the Vulture Festival on Saturday, the actress known for His Three Daughters mentioned that she doesn’t return to Marvel simply for the sake of it, but she sees her role in the franchise as providing her with “some feeling of insurance” that allows her to take on more daring, independent projects.

“I’ve never really had the mindset of ‘one for them, one for me,’” explained the Ingrid Goes West star. “Marvel has been a reliable source for me, creating a sense of security that gives me the freedom to pursue other opportunities. I don’t feel like I need to do one project to justify another.”

She further noted that her return to Marvel for projects like the Disney+ series WandaVision or the 2022 film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has always felt like a deliberate choice.

“Every time, it’s character-driven,” she elaborated. “It’s always about having an idea and wanting me to come back, rather than just placing me in something.”

Olsen also expressed her belief in a mutually beneficial relationship between blockbuster films and indie projects, explaining that major releases help smaller theaters financially, enabling them to showcase niche films. She echoed sentiments previously shared by Paul Thomas Anderson regarding the impact of Spider-Man: No Way Home on ticket sales, allowing his film Licorice Pizza to be screened.

“I do think that’s the relationship,” she stated.

Earlier this year, Olsen expressed her willingness to reprise her role as Wanda Maximoff if a suitable project arises: “I love returning to this character when there’s a good way to utilize her. I’ve been fortunate that I was used well from the beginning, even though there was a moment when people weren’t sure what to do with me… if there’s a good way to use her, I’m always happy to come back.”

Recently, the Emmy nominee appeared in the star-studded sci-fi thriller The Assessment, which debuted at TIFF in September and was later acquired for distribution outside Germany by Prime Video.

At Vulture Fest, Olsen provided an update on her upcoming dark comedy Love Child, in which she stars alongside Charles Melton. “I’ve never worked harder for a movie that’s facing challenges in production,” she said about the Todd Solondz-directed film. “If you want to make a bold statement that says, ‘Todd Solondz needs money to make a movie,’ that would be fantastic.”
