The Al Marmoom: Film in the Desert Festival Launches with Emirati Talent

The festival is set to showcase two short films by Emirati filmmaker Hussain Alansari, along with a feature on the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre.

H.H. Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, has inaugurated the fourth edition of the Al Marmoom: Film in the Desert festival. Taking place in the Al Marmoom Desert Reserve, this event aims to enhance Dubai’s growing film industry by offering a platform for creative talents to present their work and connect with a wider audience.

Running until January 12 under the theme “Where Stories Come to Life,” the festival will feature over 80 film screenings, in addition to workshops, panel discussions, and talks led by industry experts. This initiative is part of the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033, underscoring Dubai’s ambition to establish itself as a global center for creativity and cinematic innovation.

H.H. Sheikha Latifa highlighted Dubai’s capacity to attract premier talent in the film sector, attributing this to its advanced infrastructure and supportive creative ecosystem. “Cinema is a unique blend of technical and artistic mastery. It not only captures the essence of societies but also preserves the history and culture of nations,” she stated.

The festival’s varied program includes over 30 workshops conducted by distinguished experts, featuring special sessions from Zayed University’s College of Arts and Creative Enterprises. Attendees can also enjoy a selection of films curated from 240 submissions, including entries vying for awards in the Al Marmoom Short-Film Competition across four categories: documentaries, animation, live-action, and AI-generated films.

A standout feature of the event is the Immersive Experience Zone, which presents AI-driven digital artworks, murals, and installations by artists Ghaleb Hawila, Abdullah Lutfi, and Mikhail Antykov. The festival also offers activities such as heritage and musical performances, AI movie creation, planetarium stargazing, and desert safari tours.

During her visit, Sheikha Latifa explored the festival’s pavilions, interacting with participating artists and commending their creativity and impactful messages. “This festival is a celebration of Dubai’s identity and a catalyst for intellectual dialogue, cultural exchange, and the nurturing of young talents,” she remarked.
