Collaboration to Empower Emerging Filmmakers

Two nonprofit organizations are joining forces to support emerging filmmakers in completing their projects.

Introducing the Rising Filmmakers Finishing Fund

The Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (CAPE) and The Asian American Foundation (TAAF) have announced the launch of the Rising Filmmakers Finishing Fund. This initiative will award $50,000 post-production grants to two Asian American, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander filmmakers for their second to fifth feature films. In addition to financial support, the selected grantees will gain valuable networking opportunities within the CAPE and TAAF communities.

Eligibility Criteria for Applicants

Applicants must present a live-action narrative feature project that is at least 90 percent complete in principal photography or currently in post-production. Furthermore, the project should align with CAPE’s mission to promote diversity by educating, connecting, and empowering AANHPI artists and leaders in the entertainment and media sectors.

Addressing Industry Disparities

“It’s common for talented independent filmmakers to make a remarkable debut, only to struggle for years or even decades to produce their next feature. The statistics show that women and people of color face significant challenges in making this transition,” stated Michelle K. Sugihara, CAPE’s executive director. “This Finishing Fund aims to assist Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander filmmakers in advancing their careers by facilitating the completion of their subsequent projects.”

Commitment to Career Development

“TAAF is dedicated to ensuring that creatives and storytellers receive the support they need to flourish throughout their careers. The Rising Filmmakers Finishing Fund addresses critical gaps in career development,” remarked Dr. Masum Momaya, TAAF’s director of narrative change. “We are excited to collaborate with CAPE, a leading advocate for AANHPI creatives, to provide filmmakers with the necessary resources and support to bring their stories to life. Representation of AANHPIs both on-screen and behind the camera is essential for fostering safety, inclusion, and belonging in America.”

Submissions are currently open and will remain so until March 31 on Coverfly.
