BBC World Service Enhances News Coverage for Syria

The BBC World Service has announced an expansion of its services for audiences in Syria, in light of the recent rapid developments in the region. The enhanced audio service will be available on medium wave and FM, delivering independent news to the people of Syria and neighboring countries during a time when local media and digital platforms are facing disruptions.

This service will broadcast news and information in Arabic, featuring BBC News Arabic bulletins throughout the day, including programs like World at One and Newsnight. Additionally, it will include segments from the Gaza Lifeline service and contributions from correspondents such as Feras Kilani, along with the BBC’s extensive network of reporters in the area. An English-language offering, curated from World Service English, will also be available. The Syrian radio network will transmit on medium wave frequencies of 720kHz and 639kHz, as well as on 93.0 FM.

Jonathan Munro, Global Director of BBC News, commented on the initiative: “As we have all been watching, listening to, and reading about the dramatic changes that have swept through Syria, the Syrian population has been left without essential access to reliable and independent news about the events taking place. The BBC World Service’s enhanced services will bring them the latest breaking news and analysis from Syria, the Middle East, and the rest of the world.”

In response to the unfolding situation in Syria, BBC News has implemented special programming throughout the week. On December 7 and 8, World Service English adjusted its schedules to address the rapidly developing story. Additional episodes of the BBC Global News podcast have been released, with correspondents such as Barbara Plett-Usher, Lyse Doucet, and Feras Kilani providing breaking news across various BBC platforms.

The BBC World Service has a history of responding to global emergencies. Most recently, in November 2024, it launched an emergency radio service for Gaza, which continues to operate. In May 2023, during the conflict in Sudan, BBC News Arabic initiated an emergency radio service. Furthermore, in February 2022, the BBC News Ukraine service expanded its TV bulletins following the country’s invasion.
