The BBC has acquired the adult animated series Deano, which follows the adventures of a mischievous eight-year-old boy with a heart of gold. The show combines the chaos of a modern family with sharp satire and will be available on BBC iPlayer and BBC One.

Originally a web series, Deano gained a global following with millions of views across social media platforms. The series consists of eight 30-minute episodes and is created and written by Australian creators Dean Thomas and David Ferrier. It is co-produced by Australian animation studio Hooligan Animation, BBC Studios, and 20th Television Animation, with BBC Studios serving as the lead studio. Hulu will handle worldwide distribution.

Joe Brumm, creator of Bluey, serves as script editor and executive producer for Hooligan. The series will premiere in the UK on BBC iPlayer and BBC One, followed by streaming availability on Disney+.

The official synopsis describes Deano as a spirited and cheeky boy with a tough exterior but a kind heart. He lives in a challenging neighborhood in a house that seems ready to fall apart. Unaware of the difficulties around him, Deano embraces everyone equally, from local teenage dropouts to the town’s police chief. Central to the story is Deano’s friendship with Kit, his shy best friend from the wealthier side of town.

Sue Deeks, head of scripted pre-buy acquisitions at the BBC, said, “I cannot wait for BBC viewers to meet Deano. He is such a mischievous, engaging, and irrepressible character. The series is full of irreverent humor, warmth, and optimism – a real delight for audiences.”

The executive producers for Hooligan Animation include Greg Basser, Tracey Robertson, Ross Shuman, Nathan Mayfield, and Tracey Vieira. Alongside Joe Brumm, Adam Bailey is the executive producer for BBC Studios.

Deano will be produced at Hooligan’s studios in Brisbane, Australia, with support from the Australian Federal Government’s Producer Offset and a PDV grant from the State of Queensland.
