The Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF) and Fantastic 7 Initiative

The CIFF has proudly chosen Ayin Hara, a project by Iraqi director Yasir Kareem, to represent the festival at the prestigious Fantastic 7 initiative during the Cannes Film Festival. This initiative, organized annually by the Cannes Marché du Film in collaboration with the Sitges Film Festival, highlights genre cinema by showcasing seven exceptional fantasy, horror, and science fiction projects nominated by leading international festivals.

About “Ayin Hara”

Ayin Hara has already made waves at the 45th CIFF in 2024, where it participated in the festival’s Cairo Film Connection. Set against the stunning backdrop of the marshes in southern Iraq, the film intricately blends myth and realism. It narrates the story of a young woman’s courageous stand against deeply entrenched traditions in a conservative society, delving into themes of fear, resistance, and identity.

CIFF President’s Statement

Hussein Fahmy, the President of the Cairo International Film Festival, expressed his pride in the festival’s involvement in such a significant global initiative. He stated, “We are honored to be among the select festivals given the opportunity to nominate a project for Fantastic 7. We believe Ayin Hara offers a unique cinematic voice and a distinct Arab perspective that merits international recognition and support.”
